Developments in new/digital media mean that audiences can now have access to a greater variety of views and values. To what extent are audiences empowered by these developments?

LR Introduction-

New and digital media has given the audience a sense of empowerment because it has allowed the audience to have more access to a variety of views and values. This is hugely beneficial for the audience because their ability to gain more information through NDM has allowed their empowerment to grow and has given them a chance to experience news from different sources, whether that is a verified account or a citizen journalist on social media which is also as valuable. Accessibility to sources such as Citizen journalism has allowed the audience to feel empowered due to their ability to make their own assumptions and opinions with this due to a variety of sources. A prime example of this is the use of video camera phones and how this has given the audience a chance to become journalists themselves allowing them to share but also consume news from citizens such as themselves.

Globalisation and the media

1) Why was Google Glass controversial?

Google glass was controversial because it is believed that it is likely to make people less interactive in general. In addition, Google glass records the public and it is able to recognise peoples faces, this caused a lot of controversy because people felt that this was an invasion of their privacy and didn't find this acceptable which allowed Google glass to become such a controversial source.

2) What are the positive elements to Globalisation that the article highlights?

A positive is that news is more accessible meaning that the audience are empowered giving them a sense of satisfaction and value. This is a positive element because the audience are the key.


3) What are potential negatives to Globalisation?

Globalisation will have a big impact on smaller organisations because it is likely that they will find it harder to compete. Also, there wont be enough room to become competitors in this type of industry as Google are already a well known and trusted organisation.

4) What is a techno-panic? How does it link to moral panics?

A techno panic is a moral panic but for the technology industry. An example of a techno panic is the Google glass situation that invaded peoples privacy. "a techno-panic is therefore a moral panic that centres on fears regarding specific contemporary technology or technological activity. Some of the dialogue regarding Glass and its release could be viewed as both moral and techno-panics."

5) What is your opinion on the privacy debate and major corporations being able to access large quantities of personal data?
Personally I think that peoples privacy is such a valuable aspect meaning for it to be invaded will cause a lot of debate and controversy due to it being such an important element of peoples' lives. Invasion of privacy is bound to bring debate and arguments due to it being a huge topic that many feel strongly about. Also, corporations being able to access personal data can be worrying for many, this is because personal data should only be handled in a necessary and suitable manner.

Michel Faber sends David Cameron latest novel in protest over Syria

In an accompanying letter, Faber tells the prime minister that he realises “a book cannot compete with a bomb in its ability to cause death and misery, but each of us must make whatever small contribution we can, and I figure that if you drop my novel from a plane, it might hit a Syrian on the head”.

Faber, the author of acclaimed novels including The Crimson Petal and the White and Under the Skin, said the move was intended to be “a satirical gesture, just to let off some impotent steam”. “I am donating this copy of my latest novel to the war effort,” he writes to Cameron in a letter which he posted, along with his book, ending his proposal that his novel be dropped from a plane with the line: “With luck, we might even kill a child: their skulls are quite soft.”

Obviously, said Faber, the delivery “is not actually going to do anything”. But he added: “I just felt so heartsick, despondent and exasperated that the human race, and particularly the benighted political arm of the human race, has learned nothing in 10,000 years, 100,000 years, however long we’ve been waging wars, and clearly the likes of Cameron are not interested in what individuals have to say.”

Man charged with attempted murder over Leytonstone tube station attack

Police investigating a knife attack at a London tube station have charged a man with attempted murder over the alleged stabbing of a commuter.

Scotland Yard named the suspect as Muhaydin Mire, 29, from Leytonstone, who is charged over the attack on a 56-year-old man on Saturday evening at Leytonstone underground station.

Detectives and the security services were investigating whether the alleged attacker was acting alone. The incident took place after months of warnings from security officials that there has been an Isis-inspired drive to kill on Britain’s streets.

Two men were reportedly attacked at the station by a knife-wielding man who eyewitnesses said had declared: “This is for Syria.”

The episode was captured by fellow commuters, who filmed it on their phones and spread it on social media. The man was eventually overpowered by police officers, who used a Taser to disable and disarm him.

Giving away shares?

The Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have just had a baby and, as is the way of babies, she seems to have changed their lives. They’ve just announced that they’ll be giving away 99% of their Facebook stock – which is precisely the sort of thing one does when crazed with sleep deprivation and hormones – to a charitable foundation aimed at saving the world through technology.

This sudden urge to do your bit for humanity, to create a better world for other people’s children too, is one of the nicer surprises of parenthood. Perhaps the most moving exposition of it this week came from Emma and Andrew Lee, whose daughter Hope has became Britain’s youngest organ donor. Born with a fatal brain condition, she lived for only just over an hour after her birth, but her parents ensured that her liver cells and kidneys live on in others. It helped to know that in her few minutes on Earth, they said, she had “achieved more than some people do in a lifetime”.

Cameron wins Syria airstrikes vote by majority of 174 – as it happened

Britain will join the coalition of nations conducting airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Syria after MPs in the House of Commons voted to authorise the UK’s participation. MPs voted 397 to 223 in favour of sending RAF Tornados into the skies over Syria, after an all-day debate in parliament. As Patrick Wintour reports, 66 Labour MPs backed the government in defiance of the party leader,Jeremy Corbyn. In a day of soul searching, recrimination and often heartfelt speeches, it became clear David Cameron was guaranteed a clear overall majority. Corbyn, who was forced by divisions in his party to give his MPs a free vote, will be pleased that a majority of his MPs and nearly half the shadow cabinet opposed strikes. But his foreign affairs spokesman, Hilary Benn, prompted rare applause when he gave an impassioned speech, regarded as the best of the debate, in favour of strikes. “We are here faced by fascists. Not just their calculated brutality, but their belief that they are superior to every single one of us in this chamber tonight and all of the people we represent. They hold us in contempt,” he said.

Globalisation and its effects-

1) Is our news influenced by American cultural imperialism? What examples can you think of?

Yes, British news is influenced by American cultural imperialism due to American news playing a role in our news distributing and what we choose to regard as 'news' or worthy information to feed our audiences. One example of this was a news report done about a young boy who was singing the national anthem at a baseball game in America but suddenly started having hiccups. This was the American idea of 'news' and this went viral due to America's culture of news being more of an entertaining factor than a informing one. This influenced British news due to it's popularity and coverage it received which resulted in British news covering the same story in order to 'entertain' its audiences.

2) Has the increased globalisation of news improved the audience experience? How? Why?

Increased globalisation has increased and improved the audience experience heavily. This is because access to news has become easy, cheap and in some cases even free. The advancement of globalisation has allowed the audience to access of live pictures, clips and footage which has improved the audience experience. This has improved the audience experience because audiences are now able to view news live which makes the quality of the news higher and more reliable. The ability of lives news has allowed audiences to put more trust into institutions and has given audiences a wider variety of reliable, entertaining and most importantly informing news.

3) Has globalisation benefited or damaged major news institutions? How? Why?

Globalisation has benefited institutions to an extent because institutions are now able to provide and distribute news internationally which has given them the upper hand in reaching a wider audience. This is extremely beneficial due to news institutions being able to reach their maximum and allowing them to spread their news globally, informing a wider audience. The web has played a role in this benefit because institutions such as the BBC have sites that they can distribute news from giving consumers the access to their news. On the other hand it can be argued that institutions have been damaged by globalisation due to the lack of journalists that are needed. The rise of citizen journalism has started the decline of news institutions due to people being able to access news from fellow citizens. This has allowed consumers to produce their own news and also consume it from citizens which is because of globalisation.

Twitter

Twitter may be about to end its three-month search for a new CEO where it started: with once-ousted co-founder Jack Dorsey running the short-messaging service.

Mr Dorsey will be named Twitter's permanent CEO as early as Thursday, according to the technology news site Re/Code.

Twitter declined to comment.

Mr Dorsey took over as Twitter's interim CEO in July, replacing former stand-up comedian and veteran entrepreneur Dick Costolo. The change in command came amid slowing user growth that exacerbated investor concerns about the Twitter's ability to become more accessible to a wider audience.

Twitter has more than 300m users, far behind the 1.5bn people hooked on Facebook's online social network. Even Facebook's photo-sharing application, Instagram, has surpassed Twitter in size.

Third body found at scene of Paris attacks police raid in St-Denis

A third body has been found in a terrorist hideout north of Paris that was the scene of a ferocious shootout with police, French officials said, as European Union ministers met for emergency talks on tightening border security.

The Paris public prosecutor said a third, as yet unidentified person had died in the seven-hour siege in St-Denis on Wednesday alongside Abdelhamid Abaaoud, theIslamic State extremist suspected of planning the Paris attacks that left 129 people dead last Friday, and a woman thought to be his cousin, Hasna Aitboulahcen.

EU ministers meeting in Brussels were set to announce radical changes to border security after it emerged that Abaaoud, a 28-year-old Belgian national living in Syria, had been able to enter Europe and travel round the bloc seemingly at will.

“Terrorists are crossing the borders of the European Union,” the French interior minister, Bernard Cazaneuve, said at the opening of the meeting, calling on ministers to adopt urgently an EU-wide system for airline passenger information. “We can’t take any more time. This is urgent.”

Marxism and Pluralism

Developments in new/digital media mean that audiences can now have access to a greater variety of views and values. To what extent are audiences empowered by these developments?

New and digital media has brought many advantages to the audience because it has allowed them to have access to more views and values. This has allowed audiences to feel empowered due to their ability to gain more knowledge and information through NDM and the internet. Accessibility to these resources and sites has empowered audiences over institutions because of their ability to gain information from several sources allowing them to create opinions and views of their own.

Audiences are empowered by being able to access a wide variety of news and opinion using a single device such as their phone or tablet with speed and convenience. This empowers the audience massively because it gives them the ability to access the BBC or Guardian (sites) with ease and most importantly for free, meaning the convenience of this for the audience is at an all-time high giving them knowledge resulting in power, authority and a chance to form and share opinions of their own to the public i.e. online comments. NDM has allowed audiences to become equal because it gives all people the equal chance to input their opinions and ideas on social media sites such as twitter for free. This links to the pluralist view that we live in a classless society because NDM has given everyone the chance to voice their opinion in front of everyone without being punished or held against it (to an extent). This may also challenge the pluralist view to an extent because it empowers audiences and minimizes power from the newspaper industry who are struggling to make sales due to NDM's ability to give people access to news and information free of charge and also more fast than ever before with live news feeds constantly updating. 

Another way that NDM has given audiences a sense of empowerment is through its ability to educate audiences. NDM educates audiences through its ability to update people with on the go news and weather updates etc. This level of technology has empowered audiences because it has given them the chance to access information while going to work, school etc. This is a huge advantage because audiences can now have information literally in their hands giving them the ability to act accordingly i.e. news update. This challenges the Marxist view which state that the elite control and have power over the lower classes. This is because with NDM increasing and getting better constantly, this has given the lower class a sense of authority which has placed them in the same boat as the elite which challenges the Marxist view and supports the pluralistic side. However, it can be argued that the elite are now able to control and 'chose' what to feed the audience with in terms of information. This then puts the elite in control because they are able to control what the lower classes see which dis-empowers them due to a chance of unreliable information or misleading news being consumed by the audience. 

To conclude, NDM has given audiences the ability to access news, entertainment and many different content with ease and for free. This has given audiences a sense of empowerment and superiority due to their widened knowledge, views and values that NDM has allowed them to experience. It can be argued that empowerment for the audience through NDM has brought more of a pluralist view due to us living in a ‘classless society’, meaning everyone is seen as equal. This idea of pluralism has meant that empowerment for audiences has increased and left institutions such as news distributers below audiences. This is because NDM has allowed audiences to share their personal opinions on social media sites allowing them to share but also see and experience different opinions from others.

Why the bbc is worth saving?

This is an edited extract from a speech given by former BBC special correspondent Allan Little for the Hetherington Lecture at Stirling University

Is the BBC worth saving? I am not and never have been a BBC executive. I am not much of a corporation man. I am a jobbing journalist. I cannot list for you the supposed abundances the BBC brings into your homes – from Doctor Who and MasterChef, to Live from the Proms; from CBeebies to Newsnight; from the Radio 1 Breakfast Show to Poetry Please.

My subject, my concern – my life’s work, if you like – is the news. And what I want to argue is that the BBC is uniquely valuable because it can carve out in our society’s discourse a public square, a place that most of us will pass through from time to time, in which we will encounter views that we don’t like, in which we will have to acknowledge the right of others to disagree and take issue and challenge and dispute our own view of the world.

This is more urgent now than it has been at any time in my working life, not only because the BBC is now facing a formidable array of vested interests who want to see it dismantled, but because I have seen this tradition, this civic ideal, in retreat, in places where it was once strong.

BBC Scotland

BBC executives are pressing for the corporation to commission a flagship “Scottish Six” news programme to help answer growing complaints about its weak coverage of Scottish affairs, the Guardian has learned.

Executives in BBC Scotland are expected to lobby Tony Hall, the corporation’s director general, to agree to the proposal when he comes to Glasgow next week to attend a meeting of its governing body, the BBC Trust, which will also be briefed on the plan.

They want Hall to authorise a significant expansion of its news and programme-making budget from about £35m to £100m a year when he finalises the BBC’s proposals for charter renewal next year, including funding a third national radio service for Scotland.

BBC Scotland executives are thought to be focusing on these proposals after being forced to shelve far more ambitious plans to add an extra digital television channel and new online programming in the wake of swingeing spending cuts.

James Alan Craig used the social network to pose as market research firms and spread 'fraudulent' information about companies, the Department of Justice says

A Scottish man has been charged in the US for allegedly using Twitter to manipulate share prices.

James Alan Craig, from Dunragit, caused shareholders to lose more than $1.6m (£1.1m) after using the social network to spread "fraudulent" information about companies, the Department of Justice said.

According to the DoJ's indictment, the 62-year-old set up Twitter accounts using names similar to real market research firms, before tweeting false news about publicly-traded securities.

When shares in the targeted companies slumped, Craig allegedly bought securities of the firms through his girlfriend’s brokerage account and later sold them at a higher price.

What the Media Gets Wrong About Israel

The news tells us less about Israel than about the people writing the news, a former AP reporter says.

Important aspects of the media-saturated conflict between Jews and Arabs is also the least covered: the press itself. The Western press has become less an observer of this conflict than an actor in it, a role with consequences for the millions of people trying to comprehend current events, including policy makers who depend on journalistic accounts to understand a region where they consistently seek, and fail, to productively intervene.

An essay I wrote for Tablet on this topic in the aftermath of the war sparked intense interest. In the article, based on my experiences between 2006 and 2011 as a reporter and editor in the Jerusalem bureau of the Associated Press, one of the world’s largest news organizations, I pointed out the existence of a problem and discussed it in broad terms. Using staffing numbers, I illustrated the disproportionate media attention devoted to this conflict relative to other stories, and gave examples of editorial decisions that appeared to be driven by ideological considerations rather than journalistic ones. I suggested that the cumulative effect has been to create a grossly oversimplified story—a kind of modern morality play in which the Jews of Israel are displayed more than any other people on earth as examples of moral failure. This is a thought pattern with deep roots in Western civilization.

TalkTalk to resume X Factor sponsorship this weekend

TalkTalk is bringing back its X Factor sponsorship this weekend after a two-week suspension, following a police investigation into last month's cyber attack.

The resumption of the sponsorship, which includes TalkTalk idents during the ad breaks for the ITV show, is a sign that the telecom firm believes the police investigation is making headway.

The company, which uses CHI & Partners as its creative agency, is still keeping most of its brand advertising on pause during the investigation. A fourth arrest was made this week.

Some adspend has been diverted into messages of reassurance, chiefly online and on social media.

But TalkTalk is understood to feel that its estimated £10 million-a-year sponsorship of The X Factor is popular with ITV viewers, who have commented on social media about the absence of the TalkTalk idents at the start and end of each commercial break.

TalkTalk has admitted the bank details of more than 20,000 customers may have been hacked, as well as up to 1.2 million email addresses, names and phone numbers.

A spokesman for TalkTalk said: "The investigation continues and we continue to reassure and inform our customers about the latest developments."

Twitter's new icon is unlikely to break Facebook's heart

As Twitter swaps favourites for likes, Chris Buckley, TMW Unlimited's chief digital officer, explains what the change will mean for users.

Social network functionality is changing and brands should watch closely because the tech platforms are making a serious bid to build emotional connections with users. 

Facebook is testing a range of emoji-style reactions to posts and now Twitter has replaced its Favorite star button with a new Like function, which confusingly at first glance, is symbolised by a heart icon.

Calling the new rating function a Like is hardly original. Twitter's announcement suggested the heart icon is universal and more expressive than the Favorite star, and went on to claim, "In our tests, we found that people loved it."

Industry reacts to free Sun website

Media buyers have welcomed The Sun's decision to drop its online paywall but warned that it will become more dependent on digital platforms.

Stuart Bowden, MEC’s joint chief executive, said "strategically, it was probably the only option" for The Sun as "they lack the digital scale we need" with only 225,000 paying subscribers.

Bowden added: "From a media agency perspective, it’s a good move. But I’m not sure it’s a good move for them in the long term because their revenue stream in the future will be less in their hands. They’re going to need to distribute on the [online] platforms that people are on."

Another buyer, who cut annual online adspend with The Sun from a pre-paywall seven-figure sum in 2013 to the low tens of thousands, said: "Our clients want an audience of millions. You’re not just up against the Mirror and MailOnline. It’s Google and Facebook."

News UK’s chief executive, Rebekah Brooks, has set "ambitious" internal targets to win ad revenue. 

A Sun insider said: "The challenge is three things: to grow audience, to grow profitability and to maintain editorial purpose. And no-one has really cracked it. MailOnline hasn’t got profitability and has arguably lost purpose. The Guardian has got audience and kept its purpose but not got profitability."

This is good for spotify tidal and now Deezera they are a web based streaming service from music to news and entertainment and now streaming football commentary.They already have 6 million subscribers and I think they may have more as they have such a wide range of streaming service for every type of fan. Which is probably going to attract music and football fans both to sign up.This means spotify is getting caught up as people were saying they were the front runners for being the biggest and best streaming service in the world but probably not for long.

In my opinion this is a great thing for the music industry and the fans of music as we can stream anything just by our subscriptions.Some musician such as Taylor swift said she didn't want her music to be on their she thought it would not generate enough revenue for herself but look now.She is probably not happy about this because everyone streams music nowadays.

• Ad blockers are wreaking havoc with the online revenue of newspapers, yet some groups continue to throw money around to acquire online rivals. What happens when boom turns to bust?
• More than that, Facebook and the social mob are becoming a news hub of their own for hundreds of millions of (often young) users – potentially eclipsing the value of discrete news websites. One damned thing as well as another.

How live video on Periscope helped 'get inside' the Syrian refugees story

The negative side of coverage of the Syrian crisis has been dehumanising references to “swarms” of refugees, and an emphasis on numbers rather than people.

However, one journalist for German newspaper Bild has found a way to use his smartphone to help those people tell their stories direct to readers. Or rather viewers.

The article talks about how online news content need to be put behind a 'pay wall' which then ensures the survival of journalism. It also discusses the way that online content is easily accessible for the public. This means people can easily access exclusive news through the internet i.e the guardian online. This article believes that if a site such as the guardian online places a pay wall in front of the site giving people news but for a paid amount then the journalism will slowly regain its power and survive through todays advancement.

This idea of a pay wall will bring a newspaper industry such as the guardian revenue which will help them distribute a pay to their journalists. This may seem like a good idea because it shows clearly how it may help newspaper businesses regain their position in the news world.

My opinion

Personally,I don't agree with newspapers needing to put online content behind a pay wall, this is because of the new and digital media impact, news can be accessed from anywhere across the world and from different sources regardless of the pay wall. This means the pay wall will not have much of an impact on whether or not people access that news. This means the pay wall will not be able to function effectively because it's purpose to create revenue from the public will not be earned.

I agree with Murdoch to an extent. This is because the BBC is a powerful source in British news and by the BBC institution providing free news for the public this disadvantages other institutions but also the newspaper industry. However, I do believe that an institution such as the BBC's success relies on the fact that the news they provide is free. This may mean if they choose to charge the public for news this may cause them to decline. The public rely on free news heavily because the world is changing and people are now able to gain information for cheaper or even for free at times which has caused them to become reliant on this.


2) Was Rupert Murdoch right to put his news content (The Times, The Sun) behind a paywall?

I think that Murdoch was right to put a pay wall in his content because the news that the sun and the times provide exclusive news that the public should pay for. This is because the costs of journalism and website content is costly for the company and by putting a pay wall this may help them regain some revenues to help them make profits. However, I do not know if it was a smart decision because the news that these institutions provide is already out there on the web and is easily accessible on other websites and even social media. This makes the sun and times decline in viewers because their information and news isn't valued as much considering it is accessible on other sites.

I agree with this comment because the article doesn't take into consideration the access of news through the internet. Even if there is pay wall that is applied people will still manage to get the same news for free which will not benefit Murdoch's institutions because they may lose their audience due to this 'pay wall'.

I personally think that the chances of survival of newspapers is every slim. This is because the world is advancing and the need for journalists isn't necessary. Technology has made the need for newspapers very slim because it has made accessing news more convenient for the public. News now can be consumed through smartphones, social media and the internet this has made it much easier for the public to access news 'on the go' and most importantly for free. The older generation may prefer a print version of news but as time goes on the younger generation will become the older generation and their routine of checking news through the internet will become of the norm. Newspapers may survive if they are able to come up with an idea to regain their audience. However, if the BBC and other news institutions choose to put a pay wall behind their content then this may play a role in their survival. If this happens then the public may consider switching to the traditional way of consuming news and this is through print. 

"The world is changing and newspapers need to adapt to that." This is a quote from Rupert Murdoch about newspapers being able to adapt to the changes occurring in the media and the world. Newspapers need to realise that technology is constantly increasing and making new methods for people to access news and newspapers need to provide something new and different to ensure that they gain sales and recline back up to help print survive through an advancing ever changing world. If the print industry is able to deliver a service such as this then their survival is bound to happen and may allow print to exist for another 100 years or so.
